Let’s face it: 2020 held a lot of us back. It felt nearly impossible to complete new, large projects or personal milestones. Thankfully, 2021 is right around the corner. It’s your chance to start fresh and start focusing on you again.
At Urban Design Associates, we know the new year won’t wipe the slate clean of the pandemic or damages caused by it, but we do know you’ll be more prepared. That’s why we have faith in you for your new year’s resolutions, no matter how big, like building a custom home for your retirement, or how small, like going on walks every other night, they are.
If you’re going big with your new year’s resolutions and your focus is your home, we have some ideas to help you.
1. Design Your Dream Home
There is no better time to start planning your dream home than the beginning of a new year. You already have an idea of what you want, so why not make it your new year’s resolution to solidify your plan? Begin by making a personal timeline for yourself. In the first few months, for example, you can finalize your list of wants and needs for building a custom home, while at the tail-end of the year, you can finish your resolution off by finding the perfect architect for the job.
The first part is especially fun. Every dream home begins with a list of wants and needs. Start off by writing things you’d like to see in your home. The next step will be to work on your budget. Once you have an idea of how much you can spend on building a custom home or remodeling your current home, you’ll have a better idea of how to further organize your wish list.
As you work your way through the list, start separating wants and needs, and then separate the list further by room. When finished, it can look something like this:
- Quartz counters
- An Island
- Plenty of counter space
- Gray cupboards
- Tile backsplash
- Soft-Close Cupboards
- A Smart Refrigerator
Once you have your list, you’re ready to do some research on lots, architects, and more. We can help you there too. Here’s a blog on questions you should ask an architect before hiring them. Just remember to break this resolution into sizable chunks — designing and building a new home should be a fun experience, so don’t overwhelm yourself by doing it all at once!
2. Take the Leap and Move
Moving is a big decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly. But if you’ve wanted to get out of your current home or state for some time, make it your resolution this year to get it done.
We recommend sunny Arizona; a beautiful state with beautiful weather all year long. When people commonly think of Arizona, they think of a sandy desert. This is actually far from the truth. Many cities in central and northern Arizona have all four seasons, stunning mountain views, and greenery! If you’re looking for a place like that, Flagstaff might be the place for you!
If you’re wanting to get away from the cold and have the convenience of living near a big city, try Scottsdale. Just east of Phoenix, Scottsdale is home to majestic mountain ranges and has been voted one of America’s happiest cities. Everything in Scottsdale is relatively new — the city was founded in 1951 — and has plenty of room to grow. So whether you’re looking to buy or build, Scottsdale has plenty of options for you.
3. Start Your Remodel
Are you tired of your kitchen or your master bathroom? Make it your goal this year to finally remodel them. You deserve a home that’s your oasis — it should be your retreat, so it’s time to make it just that.
When it comes to remodeling and interior decorating, there really isn’t a right way to do it. You can choose to follow trends, but we believe you should ultimately do what you want to do. It’s your home after all. So if you want your walls to be red, paint them red! If you want your kitchen to have quartz countertops instead of granite, make it so!
It’s your home. You deserve to be happy in it. Keep in mind, though, that some remodels may require the help of an architect.
4. Build A Home to Retire In
Building a home can take a long time, which is one reason why they’re good investments for the future. If you’re getting close to retiring, consider buying a lot in an area you like and working with an architect to make your dream home a reality for your retirement. If you start early, then the home will be waiting for you with open doors instead of you waiting on it.
If you plan on building a home, we recommend finding architects like us who are in charge of the entire build from start to finish. It will take a lot of stress off your shoulders, and you’ll be able to focus on enjoying your last years in your career instead.

There are so many routes you can take, such as:
